Carnival capers tackle local obesity and skills deficit.

In 2012 "End Child Poverty" reported on extreme poverty in Clementswood (42%) and Loxford  wards (44%), both in the constituency of Ilford South.  To tackle this local deficit Redbridge Carnival Association applied to Help a Capital child for funding towards a series of classes, that will provide a number of transferable skills to local children, whilst also tackling local child obesity levels as part of a programme termed "Carnival Capers."

From the beginning of the next school year, for a period of 20 weeks we will be funding Gymnastic classes, Bollywood/Street Dancing classes and Steel Pan Lessons at Clementswood Community Centre and Winston Way Primary School.  The project will give priority to children aged between 6-11 especially those whose parents are receiving government benefits or come from low income families.

Chairman of Redbridge Carnival Wilson Chowdhry said:

"This project will provide talented children from impoverished backgrounds with opportunity to develop new skills, whilst revealing untapped talent from a community often ignored.  Moreover, the lessons will tackle the high obesity levels amongst children from poor backgrounds, creating a fitter more active society."

He added;

"Our committee hopes that participants will perform at our Carnival event this year, on completion of their course, allowing them to showcase their new found abilities and instilling pride in their endeavours. Perhaps even uncovering the stars of the next generation."
